The glory days of the Atlanta dance club known as Backstreet, are re-lived in a stunning gallery of color images presented by Sandy Springs photographer Marti Griffin. The exhibition, “Backstreet: The Atlanta Dance Club Retrospective” goes on display beginning May 15 through June 15, 2008 at Midtown West's Art Space International, 1192 Huff Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. “If you were a regular patron of this once-iconic dance club, these works will bring back a flood of memories,” says Ms. Griffin. “For those who never got the chance to be there, I believe they will get a real sense of what that place was all about.” The popular club opened it's doors in 1975 and closed them in 2004. Ms. Griffin's commercial exposure to Backstreet began in 1996 when she was asked to shoot covers of Intersound Record label's "Dancing" series of CD's. |
“The avant-garde atmosphere and hip sophistication of the patrons at Backstreet provided the perfect setting for that assignment,” recalls Ms. Griffin. “I got to know the lighting director Pete McHugh and, he saw what I'd done for Intersound, showed my work to the Backstreet owners who then asked me to do shoots for them...” Ms. Griffin's photographic career has spanned three decades. Her talent has been showcased worldwide in top magazines, advertising for major corporations and in cover art for a various recording artists. Honors presented to her include, NY Art Directors Club 64th Annual Exhibition Merit Award, several Bronze Addy Awards from the Atlanta Advertising Club, a Gold Addy Award from the Birmingham Art Directors Club, and a Merit Award from the Advertising Photographers of America. She is a member of the Atlanta Photography Group. |
